Opening
— At Lone Tratt’s Poetry-and-Painting Reading

Each painting bears an opening—
the exhibition’s shared signature.

In the gallery,
before footsteps touch the floor,
they are already confiscated
by the gaps.

Someone says, Newfoundland.
Someone else says, two elephants,
across a single silence,
slowly reaching out their trunks.
Another says, glass,
reflecting money and desire.

July.

We gather around those gaps
as if around a well.

One by one,
we scoop up
our own moons.

After the reading,
the canvases remain still.

What moves
is the light
inside our bodies.

Gojo Cafe Ethiopia

Remembering Grandma’s Hands
—with LM, at Gojo Cafe Ethiopia
By Hongyun

That gray-brown injera,
covered with countless tiny pores.
Like time, breathing quietly within,
never gone.

Following my friend’s lead,
I tear off a piece from the shared platter,
wrap it around beef, chicken,
lentils and greens.

Its sourness spreads,
yet arrives first
at another kitchen.

Steam rises from the bamboo steamer.
Grandma lifts the lid.
Sweet rice cakes, plump and white,
breathe out the faint fragrance
of fermented rice.

Too impatient to wait,
I reach out, break off a piece,
and slip it into my mouth.

Grandma hands me a pair of chopsticks.
The veins on the back of her hand
surface like roots breaking through soil.
“It’s alright to have a taste; mind the heat.”

Now,
on another continent,
I lift another warm meal
with my hands.

It is not that sourness
remembering sweetness.

It is my hands
remembering hers.

飞往另一个黄昏;
